Rijeka
The third largest city in Croatia, Rijeka is not only the communication, economic and cultural center of the whole Kvarner, but also an attractive tourist destination. It is also the biggest Croatian port and the nearest exit to the sea for Central Europe. Rijeka is a big and bustling town living in tune with the dynamics and energy of the economy which combines in a quite special manner with a specific Mediterranean ambiance.

Rijeka is also a city of Baroque and Neo-classicist palation houses, of art galleries, and museums. One of the sites which identify the city is undoubtely Trsat, a fortified burg once belonging to the Croatian Frankopan princes. This medieval fortified town (dating from the 13th century) underwent alterations in the 17 century, and in 1826 it was renovated in Romanesque style.

In the 1960 it was adapted for tourist puirposes. From here, one can enjoy a stunning view of the entire Bay of Kvarner. Trsat, which is reached by the longest staircase in the land ? 538 steps, is the final resting place of the Frankopans, as well as being a shrine visited by thousends of people every year.
